NOT JUST A SUITCASE

Indoor schools touring

One young girl, one long journey and one gigantic suitcase

For those children with inquisitive minds and for adults who have long forgotten the benefits of letting your imagination run free, the RoguePlay Theatre performs a beautifully visual piece of Physical Theatre.

Andy Jones, Henley Fringe Trust

Not Just A Suitcase is a family friendly piece of Physical Theatre, playfully delving into the realms of culture and language.

Using a mix of Physical Theatre, Circus, Contemporary Dance, and encompassing an original soundtrack, the story is one of a young girl’s dreams of travel. When teenage life becomes too much, the young girl, embarks on a journey of discovery to encounter the real world through eager eyes. Armed only with a map, a cowboy hat and a reception bell, she meets weird and wonderful characters, none of which however speak the same language, or any recognisable language at all. She must find the ways and means of communicating in the diverse world she discovers. Her journey means she must earn money, find her own precarious route across seas and fend off clipboard street saleswoman, until at last she makes a true friend. Her friendship is fleeting, as the friend disappears as quickly as she appeared. Finally, she is forced to reflect on her own life and realise her longing for home and need for a good relationship with her mother.

The script itself is a combination of French, Portuguese, English and Gibberish, and focuses on the importance of communication and human relationships. Throughout the journey we witness her personal growth and how her preconceptions change. Focusing on language, her experiences in this piece strike a chord with the relationships and transience of our young people today.

Performed at The Custard Factory Theatre, Henley Fringe Festival and Buxton Fringe in 2010, the piece also toured schools throughout 2011.

This piece is still performed sporadically so contact us if you would like to discuss further.
